Former College Instructor and Current English and Writing Teacher/Tutor

I have over 4 years of experience tutoring writing and English-related subjects. I graduated from Rosemont college with a B.A. in English literature and writing and spent some time in a creative writing M.F.A. program before finishing my M.A. in English at the University of North Dakota. I have spent two years teaching freshmen composition courses and this will be my second year teaching AP English Language and Composition. In high school, I was an honors student at the top of my class and received all A's in my English classes while taking many extracurriculars. I have since gone on to explore the many fields of English beyond literature to technical writing, journalism, debate, proposal writing, genre-specific studies, and more. With the burgeoning fields of technological careers, my interests have shifted towards optimizing writing and language skills for students based on their wants, needs, and especially their bright futures. Working as a teacher both in-person and online has given me experience and skills with both. I have curated materials for teaching and tested methods with a variety of students with diverse needs and learning styles. I've worked with demographics of high-achieving students, international students, and students with disabilities as well so I recognize some of the unique challenges students face and need with extra tutoring. Ultimately, my goal is to make student's independent learners and confident in their writing skills.

Master of English Rhetoric and Composition, taught English writing at the university for two years

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I am highly interested in being an essay writing tutor for Lessonpal. I love collaborating with people through writing, and I love helping people become the best writers they can be. During my Rhetoric and Composition Master’s program, I was a graduate teaching assistant for English 101 and 102. As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught six classes of English writing (from my own syllabi), where I saw numerous issues in student writing. I worked with my students one on one to help them fix their writing by going into their shared Google Drive documents and heavily editing and revising their work through comments and suggestions. Throughout all six classes that I taught, I prioritized giving my students individualized attention after every essay they turned so that they could learn from their mistakes and become stronger writers with every assignment. While I was helping my own students with their writing, I was also working with my cohort outside of class. We would have video calls from eight at night until two in the morning where we revised and edited each other's papers to ensure that we were producing high quality work for our professors. Through collaboration with my peers, we helped each other grow as writers, editors, and thinkers. We pushed each other and supported each other to become the best we could be, and I would love to take these skills and bring them to others through Lessonpal. From my experiences of teaching and being a student, I know that writing takes individualized attention. Everyone is at a different place in their writing, and everyone needs help with different things. However, regardless of the challenges that people face in their writing, I am confident that I have the skills, experience, and passion for writing, editing, and interpersonal collaboration to help others become the best writers they can be.

Professional Writer and Editor, Writing mentor

I have been a strong English student since my elementary school days, which carried forward through my scholastic career. In my junior year of high school, I placed into a program allowing me to take a college writing course for credit. I also spent time copy editing for my high school newspaper. When I attended university, I placed out of English 101 and 102 based on my performance on the written portion of the assessment exams. From there, I continued to excel in written assignments, whether 500 word essays or 5000 word papers. I wrote a weekly column for my college newspaper, then became the news editor, a role in which I both wrote and edited stories. In this role, I worked with other students to not only improve their writing through editing but showing them what I edited and why. I offered feedback to help them improve. I began freelance news reporting during the last two years I was in college. From there, I became a full-time reporter for several years, before being hired by the age of 30 to become the Managing Editor of a startup local newspaper. In this role I collaborated with my staff reporters and stringers to help them maximize their abilities and reach their potential. From there, I was hired to become the Writer-Editor for a national non-profit based just outside Washington, DC. Here I wrote and edited content for a national audience, for both the organizations website, electronic newsletters and the bi-monthly magazine sent to members. I am a writer at heart, but also a teacher. When in school, I often helped my peers with their written assignments, working with them to craft and hand in written assignments they never knew they were capable of producing. I did not write for them but helped them write for themselves. I like to bring out the best in people and help them in ways they can carry forward even when I am no longer there.
